ASSIGNMENT FILM 26.1

TIM BURTON

Charlie And The Chocolate Factory

I am writing an essay on auteur theory, I will be discussing Tim Burton and two of his films. The first movie I will be discussing is Charlie And The Chocolate Factory which is a musical fantasy and the second is James and the giant peach. The reason I chose Tim burton is because I have always been a big fan of his films ever since I was a small child. Tim Burton is an American Filmmaker, artist, writer and animator. Burton is mostly familiar for his dark gothic horror fantasy movies like Beetlejuice, Corpse bride etc. He started off with making short films as a series. His first fully animated film was 9, others had been stop-motion. In his career he has directed one music video  - The killers, 'Bones'. He is a dyslexic person. Several of Tim's movies are based on drawings he made when he was younger, he had a very creative mind. Tim studied at the California Institute Of Art.

The movie was set in 1964 but it came out in 2005. The ambience of the factory in the movie is ambiguous, made to look like a cross between UK and USA. They use London's architecture, streets and also accents as you can tell, however they use American clothing, mailboxes along with American terminology. At the start of the movie there are very dull colours used to show poverty and how boring the place was, later on in the movie the colours get more interesting as the scenes get more interesting e.g when they're in the factory the colours used are very luminous and bold. Throughout the movie I think that he used more intense colours.

In the beginning they show the city they are in and they show so much poverty around them. Charlie Bucket is the main character so he is the hero in the movie and book. Bucket family live in house that is leaning crazily in all different directions. Charlie is like a role model for the young society as he is always jubilant with whatever he gets in life. No matter how hard life gets, he's going to move on and not be negative about it. The moral of the story is to never complain about what you have and always be grateful as you never know what is coming towards you. When the kids visit the factory they behave very wild and greedy which ends up in them having crucial injuries for life. That is what they got for being greedy. Charlie Bucket was the only boy out if five which was patient and very respectful towards the factory which Mr . Wonka obviously realised and Charlie was awarded with his chocolate factory.

This is the scene when the camera angle is right down on Veruca and it makes her seem more small and needy and powerless. She is greedily asking for a golden ticket, not even asking but telling her parents she wants it no matter what. This makes us look down on her.

This was the scene when the fathers factory workers are looking rapidly for a golden ticket for Veruca . They are shown in this angle to get the feel that they are powerless and are there for their jobs. The workers have no control and are only controlled by her stressed out dad who is doing everything to fulfil her dreams.

As you can see that Veruca's father is looking
down at the workers and it shows that the are trying to show that there is a massive difference            between the workers and Mr. Salt ( no power).

LIGHT USAGE

There are mainly high light scenes in CACTF and not that much low ablaze scenes. The movie is both dark and bright, dull yet colourful, this gives a sense to the audience that the movie is cheerful yet dramatic.  There are more bright colours when the children are in the chocolate factory but when they are showing Charlie and his house it is way more dull which implies poorness and poverty. I think that the lighting is applicable for this film so I don't disagree at all. They use dull scenes to impact serious scenes and for more fantasy and more injurious scenes like when they are in the chocolate factory. There a lot of light colours when they reach the factory which could mean they are all happy and excited. It all depends on the scene and the mood. Bright colours are to attract the children more and give a more exciting atmosphere.

There is a lot of dialogue in this movie but most of it is sung and vocalised. All the characters speak in this film, no character is left silent in the movie.
Sound effects fit very well with the era of the movie, all of Wonka's mechanism's have a different unique sound. When Charlie is opening up the Wonka bar with the money he found on the floor there is very suspenseful music playing at that time. It gives the audience a sense of hope and anticipation. Whenever there is music being played it always fits the scene and it helps the audience with the feeling. I have inserted a picture underneath.

The clothes worn in Charlie and the Chocolate factory are very unique and creative. This is to create attention to the audience and create an atmosphere. Willy Wonka's outfit is very fantasy type which also gives a fantasy musical vibe. Veruca is dressed very posh since she is the richest girl shown in the movie as you can see to your left. Charlie and his family are dressed very frayed clothes as you can see above you. They don't dress to impress since they can't afford anything fancy since they are very poor and not wealthy enough. There is a massive difference between veruca and Charlie but I personally think that the moral is that you shouldn't judge a person by their clothing.

Charlie's families acting is very calm and full of innocence since they are very simple living people. Veruca's acting is very vicious which gives us a sense of selfishness. Burton is trying to show that poor people are very innocent and more wealthy people are greedy and selfish.

Personally I think there should've been a sequel to Charlie and the chocolate factory with the same characters and we could get an insight of how Charlie is doing with the factory along with his family and also what Willy Wonka is doing with his life after running a factory for many years. I think that a second part would've been a real hit in the media just like the remake of Lion King.

Corpse Bride (2005)

Corpse bride is one of Tim Burton's magical fairytale movie made with stop motion that has amazing graphic work. Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter voice the characters in this fantasy movie. It takes place in an European village in the 19th century and the lighting shows that with all the grayscale's. It was based on an old Jewish folktale.

The music in the movie is often church choirs and organs which gives us an atmosphere of mysterious vibes, death and fantasies. Burton is known for his death/fantasy movies so it isn't surprising. His movies normally have dead dogs, black and white checkered floors, butterflies (as you can see in the intro of the movie) scarecrows and much more. The main characters in the movies are normally paled face with massive eyes. The genre is a romantic comedy.

The buildings in Corpse Bride are not normal, there are castles and gothic mansions.
The setting of the movie has pathetic fallacy since with the eerie music and dark mysterious skies along with the pales faces of the characters. He uses a lot of white and black which links to the story line of death and marriage. The eerie music sets the mood for audience and helps with the storyline.

There is only one flashback scene in the movie which is when they are telling Victor the story of a girl other than that the scenes are in chronological order in the rest of the movie. I really do agree with giving the audience a flashback because it helps more with understanding the story for the audience.  Most of the movie is from Victor's point of view but also Emily's and Victoria's. Love was shown throughout the movie since that is the theme. (Marriage of Victor and Emily and Victor and Victoria.

The length of the movie was reasonable as it wasn't too long that it was boring the audience but not too short that it left them hanging. There was pathetic fallacy used throughout the movie, when he was proposing, eerie music, trees curled up etc. As you can see in the picture below there is a lot of darkness and mysteriousness in between the trees.

The colours affected the mood dramatically, the grayscale colours gave a historic feeling to the movie. Whenever there is a suspenseful scene the eerie music and colours come back in which makes the movie run smoothly. The music used which is the (soundtrack) with some lyrics, made the situations stand out more. In the soundtrack they have used a piano as you could hear. ⇩I think piano fits very well with eerie music since pianos are mostly used for haunted vibes. They kept the lighting low key because having too much lighting would just ruin the concept of the film since its set in the woods to do with graves and such. I feel like they have used lighting where it is appropriate e.g. the ending scene with skeletons.  Light can affect the style of the movie so keeping it suitable is the best choice in my opinion. The dullness made us think that the characters are gloomy and not full of joy which is mostly correct. Red colours were used when Victor and the governor fought which shows violence and big actions being used.

The voices of the characters links a lot to the movie and their characters played in the movie. This made the background build up and their person. It helps a lot to understand the character by the facial features and tone in voice. (Lord Barkis is a zombie and the pale skin makes it more believable). He is one of the main characters in the film.  To me he is a very selfish person and very greedy.

There are many camera angles used in corpse bride that Burton used for a reason. When the camera was down below it made the character more grand and powerful and if it was filmed from above it makes them seem less powerful just how he used in Charlie and the chocolate factory with Veruca and so on. Body language was shown by setting the camera behind someone's shoulder, so seeing a full face and the other persons body language which tells you how they feel in that situation. This was used when Victor didn't like what the governor like as you could tell by his expressions. Another interesting camera angle was when you could look from the character's point of view so you could see exactly what they are looking at. In another way it is like you are the one looking directly which is another camera angle that can be used. When the bride is emerging from her grave they use a low angle camera which shows that she is powerful and that frightens Victor because she does not seem like a normal sized human but actually she is ordinary like the others.

The butterflies symbolise nature, freedom and good luck. A butterfly is shown in the beginning and also in the end.
The crows are constantly shown throughout the movie because of their dull, gloomy colour which fits in with the moods. Crows are known to be bad birds, full of evil.
Burton uses them since they represent death, darkness and danger.
In conclusion I think both of the films are excellent in my eyes, I just think there should have been a part two to Charlie and the chocolate factory. Overall I think Burton and the crew have done a great job.
